In the majority of cases, our students are admitted to the PhD program. We are one of the nation’s leading recipients of research grants. We have over 25 research programs and institutes. Our students conduct research at many of the national laboratories and research facilities in the immediate area. Before Candidacy, you must: Pass the Qualifying Exam Students are given three tries to pass the qualifier. The first try is offered a year after they enter the program, and the other tries are each semester. Students are allowed to take the exam within their first year (as a “free try”) with no penalty if they do not pass.
