TOEFL
For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT). Please contact individual academic departments for more information, as they may choose to require a higher score.
The IBT emphasizes integrated skills so its format and scoring are different from the PBT version of the TOEFL. Please plan to take the TOEFL as soon as possible, regardless of the test’s format, to avoid delays in the review of your application.
IELTS
As an exception, you can submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
You are responsible for providing us with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS. Remember to order the TRF when you register to take the test. For Fall 2018, tests taken before June 1, 2015 will not be accepted. Your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
GRE
All applicants are required to submit an official GRE or GMAT score regardless of prior degrees earned. The preferred test is the GRE, however we accept applications with GMAT scores. The institutional code for the GRE is 4833. The institutional code for the GMAT is N2V-PT-06. There is NO department code. The test must be taken within five years of application deadline. Arrange to have official score reports sent directly to UC Berkeley by the December admissions deadline. Photocopies and/or examinee copies of score reports uploaded to applications are not acceptable.
The writing section is required of all applicants. Your application will not be reviewed if this section is missing.

PS
The statement of purpose should convince readers– the faculty on the selection committee– that you have solid achievements behind you that show promise for your success in graduate study. Think of the statement of purpose as a composition with four different parts. Approximately 500 to 1000 well-selected words (1-2 single space pages in 12 point font) is better than more words with less clarity and poor organization.
CV
Your resume or CV is a great way to supplement your application by providing the admissions committee with additional information about your qualifications. Common information found in a resume or CV include honors, educational accomplishments, relevant work or research experience (if applicable), and interests.
Fee
If you are a U.S. citizen or current permanent resident, the application fee is $105; for all others, the fee is $125. The non-refundable fee must be paid in full by credit card by the application deadline.
RL
We only accept three letters of recommendation. Including more than three letters of recommendation will result in a delay with your application review.Recommenders may be either academic or non-academic and should be able to evaluate your potential for graduate study and can comment on your potential to succeed in a doctoral program. Once you add a recommender to your application, he or she will receive an email with instructions to upload their letter. You may submit your application after all three recommenders have been added to your application. You do not need to wait for your recommenders to upload their letters before submitting your application.
Transcript
We require that you scan and upload a transcript from each university that you attended. The institution's name and expected or conferred degree must be visible on the transcript. If you already graduated then the conferral date must appear on the transcript or you will need to include a scanned image of your diploma with your transcript. Photographs of transcripts are not acceptable. It is very important to ensure the uploaded transcript is readable. An illegible transcript will delay our review of your application. Note that separate transcripts for units that were transferred from a previous institution are not required if the courses, units, and grades are included on the transcript you submit.
