TOEFL
The University of Minnesota requires a minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL with minimum scores of 21 on the writing section and 19 on the reading section
IELTS
The University of Minnesota requires a 6.5 overall with 6.5 section scores for both reading and writing.
GRE
All applicants must take the GRE General Test. GRE subject tests will not be accepted. You may submit a self-reported score in the test information-self reported section, but your official scores must be available by the application deadline. Scores should be sent directly to our institution from ETS.

Upload your statement of purpose in the "Applicant Statement" section (Statement #1). Mailed or faxed statements will not be accepted. There is no prompt for the statement of purpose, though help-text is provided in the application. You may upload other statements, but only one statement is required.
Preferred format for the statement of purpose: 12-pt font, 1-inch margins, single-spaced. Typical statement of purpose is 1-1.5 pages in length.

Three letters of recommendation are required, up to four may be submitted. Indicate your recommendation providers in the "Recommendations" section. The preferred method of receipt is online through the application system.
For Online Submission:
See here for instructions on how to request recommendation providers submit recommendations online. A link will be emailed to your writers with a unique identifier. They can then log in at their convenience to complete the brief University of MN recommendation form and upload their narrative evaluation as a PDF or Word document.
Applicants with online recommendation providers who have not yet submitted their recommendation are encouraged to re-notify their recommendation providers. Click here for instructions.
For Mail Submission:
You will need to provide your recommendation provider with a pre-stamped, pre-addressed envelope, as well as a blank copy of the University of MN Recommendation format. (This form can be downloaded in the “Downloadable Forms” section of your application.) Your recommendation provider should complete that form in addition to their narrative evaluation, and send directly to the department.

You can check the completion status of your recommendations by viewing your recommendation provider list. If it is completed, a completed date will be noted.
If your recommendation providers are having trouble submitting their recommendation, you can have them contact the department directly via phone (612-624-9535) or email (slhsgrad@umn.edu).
You may submit your application before all of your recommendations have been received. Do not wait for recommendations to submit you application.
Transcript
Unofficial copies of your transcripts should be uploaded in the "Educational Background" section of the application using the “Upload Transcripts” button. Mailed or faxed transcripts will not be accepted. You must upload a transcript from each college or university you have attended.

Official transcripts are not needed for the application process. If you are accepted to our graduate program, both the Graduate Admissions Office and our department will require official transcripts, and we will follow up with you about them.
