Graduate students in Materials Science and Engineering work closely with faculty and conduct research in state-of-the-art facilities, especially those in electron microscopy. Research in the Materials Science and Engineering department is sponsored by NSF, NASA, the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and many industrial partners. For example, a $7.5 million grant from U.S. Department of Defense funds a Lehigh-led team of scientists from Lehigh, Carnegie-Mellon, Clemson, Illinois, and Kutztown universities to determine how the atomic structure of grain-boundary interphases affects the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of strategic engineering materials.
